Top 10 Travel Writers and Their Books
Summary
This post, and its accompanying sub-posts, seek to answer two questions:
- who are my top 10 travel writers; and
- what is my favourite travel book.
As an over 60’s traveller, who’s niche travel likings are solo travel, budget travel, travelling overland and travelling by local trains and buses, I have, over the course of my life, been influenced by numerous famous travel writers.
Below, I set out what these key influences have been, and I then identify my favourite writers, both those who:
- retell their own travel adventures; and
- those who, through fiction, conjure up a fasination for travel.
For easy reading the post is divided into a number sections and sub-sections. These are identified in the accompanying ‘Page Content’ tag.
This post is accompanied by a series of more detailed posts centred on each of my chosen writers. These more detailed posts provide a brief biography of each targeted writer and an insight into each of their books, together with links allowing easy purchase from a network of local bookshops.

Early Year Fiction
From the early age of 16, or maybe younger, I have been fascinated by the fictional journeys and destinations dreamed up by Tolkien and others. Tales of Middle Earth and far away places. Desert Islands and lands with hidden treasure.
Mid Life Classics
Later, I enjoyed reading the stories of Steinbeck, Kerouac, Hemingway and Greene. Dramas based around the Great Depression, the Beatnik generation, travel across the vast spaces of America, postings in foreign lands and the every day experiences of interacting with different peoples.
Later Year Escapism
More recently, I have delved into the real life travel writings of authors like Paul Theroux, Dervla Murphy and Jan Morris. Each provides their own perspective on other cultures, daily lives and most of all, the overriding message that travel is about the journey and the people you meet along the way, not simply the goal of reaching a destination.
