Who are your favourite travel writers and what is your favourite travel book. I have started to set mine out here.

Who and what would you recommend?.

Below, I have started to set out a page on each of my favourite travel writers, many of whom have been an inspiration in my desire to travel.

Early Year Influences

From the early age of 16, or maybe younger, I have been fascinated by the fictional journeys and destinations dreamed up by Tolkien and others. Tales of Middle Earth and far away places. Desert Islands and lands with hidden treasure.

Mid Life Classics

Later, I enjoyed reading the stories of Steinbeck, Kerouac, Hemingway and Greene. Dramas based around the Great Depression, the Beatnik generation, travel across the vast spaces of America, postings in foreign lands and the every day experiences of interacting with different peoples.

Later Year Escapism

More recently, I have delved into the real life travel writings of the likes of Paul Theroux, Dervla Murphy and Jan Morris. Each providing their own perspective on other cultures, daily lives and most of all, the overriding message that travel is about the journey and the people you meet along the way, not simply the goal of reaching a destination.
